Tidal Power Projects Focus of Cobscook Conference
Eastport - - The First Annual Cobscook Bay Conference will be held Saturday, March 24th from 9:30-4:00 at the Boat School on Deep Cove Road in Eastport. The conference will focus on renewable marine resources and the potential for renewable energy from the Bay.
Three projects are being proposed to generate electricity using tidal power in the Cobscook region. Ocean Renewable Power Company is proposing to place a submersible prototype turbine in the Western Passage or near Shackford Head. The Passamaquoddy Tribe is studying two sites for tidal power. Tidewalker Associates is proposing to build a 1200 foot dam and power facility at Half Moon Cove. Representatives of each project will give presentations of their plans.
A discussion of the costs and benefits of tidal power to Cobscook communities will
ask:
- What will be the impact of each project on fisheries, aquaculture, boat traffic, and marine mammals?
- How will each project benefit people in the area?
- Will it create new jobs, lower our electric rates, or attract new businesses?
- Is it a viable project or just another grand scheme?
Seafood chowder and sandwiches will be available at lunch (donations accepted). The 2007 Cobscook Fishery Award will be presented, followed by a live auction.
Speakers will deliver the latest news on the future of the Boat School; describe a curious coalition emerging of fishermen, conservationists and scientists looking at new approaches to fisheries management; and explore why Cobscook Bay has the last good scallop grounds in Maine.
The event will end with a Speakers Reception from 3:00-4:00 with light refreshments, live music and the drawing of a door prize.
All are welcome. If you are planning to attend and want lunch, please contact the Cobscook Bay Resource Center at 853-6607 or email at: cobscook@myfairpoint.net. For a detailed schedule and to preview a list of auction items, visit www.cobscook.org
